Mr. Kobayashi s family has been producing tea in Uji since 1827. A living legend, the young Kobayashi cut his teeth at tea gardens all over the archipelago and is now one of a dozen or so living supreme level (10-dan) masters in tea making. His masterful productions run the gamut from sencha, to gyokuro. He is a practitioner of shumei: a modern agricultural philosophy that believes in utilizing the inherent strengths of the earth’s soil and seasons to grow and nurture plants. A true character, Mr. Kobayashi is by turns gracious, inquisitive, and kind. His prodigious love of tea is matched only his love of golf, Ranger boats, and fishing.
